Our U12 A team weathered the storm and progressed to the last 16 of the cup competition after a good display at Murt Scott Park on Saturday morning.
Mastergeeha A were a good strong test early on, as both teams tried to get to grips with the conditions and each other. Playing 4 at the back, the visitors looked to block all roads to goal for Ballyhar, but when Patrick O'Connor found some space for a shot outside the box after 10 mins, it was deflected off one of those defenders, which wrong footed the keeper and found the net for the opener. Mastergeeha offered plenty of threats from set pieces with a lot of height in the team, but there best chance was from a free kick outside the box that just skimmed the crossbar. With a lot of scrappy play from Ballyhar just before the break, they were happy to take a 1 goal lead into halftime. H/T 1-0
The 2nd half started well for Ballyhar with play really opening up when Callum Templeman moved to the left wing. The Ballyhar defence remained strong with Fionn Clifford, Ruben O'Leary Griffin and the outstanding Daithi Allen limiting the visitors' attacks. Alex Finn dropped into a more central role and started to pull the strings early in the half. Then, after some good attacking play, he found space on 40 mins to crack a shot from outside the box, which smashed off the crossbar but luckily fell to Templeman, who finished nicely with his right foot to make it 2-0. Ballyhar sensed an opportunity to capitalise and pushed forward for a 3rd. Jack Duggan linked well with Finn, Templeman, and O'Connor to create more opportunities with Cillian O'Sullivan, also making threatening run down the right. But it was O'Connor who pounced for the 3rd goal of the game following a bit of pinball in the Mastergeeha box. The visitors kept fighting with Noah Brown, making a fantastic save from a well hit free-kick to maintain his clean sheet. Unfortunately, he couldn't do much about the last goal of the game scored in the dying minutes following a great individual run and a deserved for the visitors.
Ballyhar now look forward to the last 16 of the Cup following a fine 2nd half performance against a tough Mastergeeha side.
Best for Ballyhar were Callum Templeman, Patrick O'Connor, Alex Finn, Fionn Clifford, and MOTM Daithi Allen, who was immense at Right Back.
